The collection of archaeological sites of Lazio which doesn't include those in Rome, give just a little taster of what can be found beyond the ancient walls of the nation's and the region's capital.
Situated 25 kilometres south-west of Rome, Ostia Antica is one of the largest and best-preserved archaeological sites in the country and one of its most popular. The site was the port of Rome during ancient times and a bustling hive of activity at the height of the Empire's power. In modern times you can walk along the port city's streets and find yourself in a Roman theatre that remains just as intact now as it was during its heyday. |
To the north of Rome we find another archaeological site from the period of Roman rule: the vast grounds of Villa Adriana close to the town of Tivoli which are included in UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites. That same accolade belongs to two further sites on the list, although they date back to a different period of history: the Etruscan Necropolis' of Cerveteri and Tarquinia. The ancient city of Vulci also belongs to the Etruscan period and is another site spread across a vast area in northern Lazio, close to the border with Tuscany.
