Profile
Lake Barcis, located in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region of northeastern Italy, is a stunning alpine lake surrounded by the majestic Dolomite mountains. Known for its emerald-green waters and unspoiled natural beauty, Lake Barcis is a popular destination for nature enthusiasts, outdoor lovers, and those seeking a peaceful escape amidst picturesque surroundings.
History
Lake Barcis is not a natural lake but rather an artificial reservoir created in the early 1950s. The construction of the Vajont Dam, intended to generate hydroelectric power, resulted in the creation of the lake by flooding the narrow valley of the Cellina River.
As a result, several villages were submerged, including the original village of Barcis. To preserve the beauty of the area and maintain tourism, a new village was built higher up on the slopes overlooking the lake.
