Bridge of Sighs
Latest update: 19 February 2022
The Bridge of Sighs is an enclosed bridge of just 11 metres in length which leads from the Doge's Palace in Venice to what used to be the palace dungeons.
You can get the best external view of the bridge from the Ponte della Paglia, a pedestrian bridge along the Riva degli Schiavoni. It's also possible to retrace the steps that prisoners would take when they were led from the palace to the prison cells. The bridge takes its name (Ponte dei Sospiri in Italian) from the sorrowful sigh the convicts would let out when they crossed the bridge and saw beautiful Venice for the final time before their incarceration. |
