​The tiny island of Palmaria is situated within the Province of La Spezia and lies opposite the seaside town of Portovenere. 

Since 1997 it's been a UNESCO World Heritage Site under the full heading of Portovenere, Cinque Terre, and the Islands (Palmaria, Tino and Tinetto). It measures a total area of just 1.6 square kilometres and has a population of around 56 residents.

Geography and Natural Beauty: Palmaria is the largest island in the Gulf of La Spezia, covering an area of approximately 1.6 square kilometers. History
Palmaria has a rich history dating back to ancient times. It was inhabited by the Ligurian tribe of the Apuani before becoming a Roman outpost. Over the centuries, it changed hands between various powers, including the Byzantines, Genoese, and the Kingdom of Sardinia.

During World War II, the island played a strategic role as it was heavily fortified by the Italian military to defend the naval base of La Spezia. Visitors can still see remnants of the military installations, including old bunkers and fortifications.
