Tyrrhenian Sea Ferry Routes
Latest update: 20 October 2023
The Tyrrhenian Sea ferry routes detail the crossings in each direction from two ports on Italy's west coast.
Of the two ports, the larger, busier and more established is Civitavecchia in the region of Lazio. It's situated an hour's drive north west of Rome and provides medium to long distance ferry services across the Tyrrhenian Sea. It's also an important port used by cruise ship companies with their big liners. Much further south we find a different kind of port in the seaside town of Sapri, with a small number of services available in summer. |

Civitavecchia Ferry sCHEDULES
The city of Civitavecchia is one of Italy's largest and most important ports. By ferry, it's possible to reach seven destinations from here and the port is also used by cruise ship companies so that their passengers can visit Rome, which is an hour or so's drive to the south-east. It's also handily-placed on the Italian road network with the E80/A12 motorway just a short distance away.
From Civitavecchia it's possible to sail to three different ports on the island of Sardinia: Cagliari the capital, Olbia and Porto Torres, with Olbia providing the shortest route and a journey time of five and a half hours. Heading south, the two Sicilian ports of Palermo and Termini Imerese are connected to Civitavecchia while there are also crossings to two foreign ports in Barcelona and Tunis. |
Sapri Ferry Schedules
The small seaside resort of Sapri is 393 kilometres south-east of Civitavecchia, as the crow flies, but a world away in every other sense. It's a quiet fishing village for most of the year which gets a bit busier during the summer as it lies at the edge of the beautiful Cilento Coast with its collection of beaches and resorts.
From Sapri there are a small amount of crossings available during the summer only, to the Aeolian Islands of Sicily. Five of the seven islands can be reached from Sapri, with the closest of those being fiery Stromboli which is a two hour hydrofoil journey and a distance of 145 kilometres away. The hydrofoils are operated by Alilauro and also sail to Lipari, Panarea, Salina and Vulcano. |
