The garden of Villa Lante is situated in the town of Bagnaia, one of the Tuscia towns in the Province of Viterbo. Given as an exemplar of Mannerist gardens, Villa Lante was originally created in 1566 before undergoing a series of transformations.

Villa Lante is a stunning Renaissance villa and garden complex located in Bagnaia, near Viterbo in the Lazio region of Italy. Renowned for its magnificent Italian Renaissance gardens, Villa Lante is a masterpiece of art and landscape architecture, attracting visitors with its harmonious design and serene atmosphere.

Villa Lante was built in the mid-16th century for Cardinal Gianfrancesco Gambara. The villa was designed by the renowned architect Vignola, while the gardens were conceived by the talented landscape architect Giacomo Barozzi da Vignola.

The villa complex comprises two main buildings, the Casino (main house) and the Palazzina (smaller house), connected by a beautiful avenue lined with statues and fountains. The gardens are divided into two terraces, each with its own unique features and artistic elements.
History
Villa Lante was commissioned by Cardinal Gianfrancesco Gambara in the mid-16th century. The design of the villa and its gardens was a collaborative effort between the architect Vignola and the landscape architect Vignola.

Over the centuries, the villa changed hands several times, with each owner making their own additions and modifications to the gardens.

​However, the overall design and essence of Villa Lante remained remarkably intact.

It consists of a large central basin with multiple water jets, symbolizing the biblical flood. The water cascades down a series of terraces adorned with statues and water features, creating a captivating display.
  • The Fountain of the Giants: This fountain is located on the upper terrace and features giant statues representing mythical figures, including giants and sea creatures. The statues are cleverly designed to spout water, adding a dynamic element to the garden.
  • The Garden of the Cardinals: The lower terrace is known as the Garden of the Cardinals and features meticulously manicured lawns, geometric hedges, and neatly trimmed boxwood designs, reflecting the formal Italian Renaissance garden style.
  • The Garden of the Mannerist Loggias: The upper terrace, also known as the Garden of the Mannerist Loggias, is a more intimate space with a series of loggias adorned with frescoes and decorative elements, providing shade and a sense of tranquility.
