Vipiteno is included in the list of Borghi Più Belli d'Italia (most beautiful villages in Italy), with the organisation of the same name making reference to the town's most famous sight in its listing headline "Le Ore Ferme sulla Tore delle Dodici".
The Torre delle Dodici or Zwölferturm in German, is a 46 metre high clock tower with a stone arch entrance way at the bottom. The tower was built in 1470 at a location that divided the new town from the old town after a 1443 fire destroyed much of the latter.
In modern times, the difference between the old and new towns isn't quite so apparent with both characterised by brightly-coloured buildings housing shops, restaurants and other businesses along the main thoroughfares of Città Nuova and Via Città Vecchia (New City and Old City Street). On the northern side of the Torre delle Dodici is Vipiteno's main square: Piazza Città or Stadtplatz in German, which is also home to the 14th century Chiesa Santo Spirito.
The local area around the town is famous for the production of Vipiteno/Sterzing yogurt which can be found in supermarket shelves throughout Italy and some parts of Europe.
Places of interest nearby include larger towns such Bressanone, Merano and Brunico or slightly smaller but no less pretty Chiusa and Castelrotto.
