Sardinia Ferry Routes
Latest update: 20 October 2023
The Sardinia ferry routes detail the crossings available from five of the island region's ports. Sardinia lies in in a central position in the Mediterranean Sea with its east coast facing the Italian mainland.
That stretch of coast is on the Tyrrhenian Sea, a part of the Mediterranean which is bordered by Corsica and the Tuscan Archipelago to the north and Sicily to the south east. Directly to the south of Sardinia is the coast of Africa, while to the west lie the Balearic Islands and the coast of Spain. Sardinia's ferry ports also connect with destinations on the French mainland. |

Asinara Ferry Schedules
The island of Asinara is situated at the north-western tip of Sardinia, in the Sassari Province. The beautiful island is officially one of Italy's national parks and famous for its wildlife and protected shoreline which is characterised by turquoise seas.
Only one human is permanently resident on the island which is dominated in the most part by a large donkey population. The donkeys, along with horses and goats roam freely around the island and can even be found on the lawn of the main reception building. Asinara can be accessed by ferry from Porto Torres or Stintino. |

Cagliari Ferry Schedules
The Sardinian capital of Cagliari is located on the south coast of the island region, facing Sicily to the south east and Africa directly to the south. There are three possible destinations from Cagliari: all Italian cities in different directions across the Tyrrhenian Sea.
Each of the three cities requires a substantial journey, with most crossings taking place overnight, leaving Cagliari in the evening and arriving at the chosen destination the next morning. Marginally closest of the three cities to Cagliari is Palermo in Sicily which takes eleven hours to reach, while the ports of Civitavecchia in Lazio and Naples in Campania both require thirteen hours. |
Golfo Aranci Ferry Schedules
The port of Golfo Aranci occupies a small isthmus of land on the north-east coast of Sardinia, facing out on to the Tyrrhenian Sea.
The town itself is a combination of the ferry port and a series of beautiful beaches which are overlooked by a mountain at the Capo Figari promontory. Translating as "Gulf of Oranges", it's just a short distance from here to the exclusive resorts of the Costa Smeralda. Four destinations are reachable by sea from Golfo Aranci: the three ports of Livorno, Piombino and Savona on the Italian mainland in Tuscany and Liguria respectively, as well as the port of Bastia on the north-east coast of French-owned Corsica. |

Olbia Ferry Schedules
One of Sardinia's most important travel hubs, the city of Olbia can boast an international airport as well as a ferry port.
Olbia is situated a very short distance to the south-west of Golfo Aranci, no more than a 25 minute drive away, but is much larger both in terms of its population and geographical dimensions. A similar set of destinations can be reached from both Olbia and its near neighbour, with both providing connections to Livorno and Piombino on the Tuscan mainland. The two exceptions are the crossings from Olbia to the Ligurian capital of Genoa to the north, and north east across the Tyrrhenian Sea to Civitavecchia. |

Porto Torres Ferry Schedules
Occupying a different area of Sardinia and facing a different sea, the coastal town of Porto Torres provides ferry crossings to a number of destinations that can't be reached from elsewhere.
Porto Torres is situated in the north-western corner of Sardinia with the Mediterranean Sea spreading out to its west and the island of Corsica within sight to its north. Two ports in Corsica can be reached from Porto Torres: Porto Vecchio and Ajaccio, from where the journey north eventually leads to Genoa. Heading west from Porto Torres it's possible to reach Nice, Toulon and Barcelona while Civitavecchia lies in the opposite direction. |

Santa Teresa Gallura Ferry Schedules
The timetables from Santa Teresa Gallura are the easiest of all to understand with just one route available. With its astonishing Rena Bianca Beach dominating the landscape, the resort of Santa Teresa Gallura is one of the most attractive in Italy. It's also a great holiday base with the numerous islands of La Maddalena Archipelago a short distance to the east and Corsica facing it to the north.
A narrow stretch of sea called the Strait of Bonifacio separates Sardinia from Corsica to the south, and this is the destination you can reach from Santa Teresa. During the summer there are as many as eight daily crossings to the port of Bonifacio with a journey time of just under an hour required to cover the 17 kilometre distance. |
