Nisida

Close to Posillipo and to the west of Naples, there is a stone causeway leading to the pretty island of Nisida which is two kilometres in circumference and just half a kilometre in diameter.
The volcanic island has a small marina for pleasure boats as well as great views of the mainland and across to the island of Procida. Nisida means “islet” in Greek and it certainly has a colourful history. |

Ancient Romans had holidays here while Brutus and Lucullus went a step further and had holiday villas built here. Along with Cassius, it’s said that this is where they plotted the assassination of Julius Caesar. There are some remains of a Roman villa on Nisida and it’s claimed that it belonged to Brutus.
In the 1800s, a prison was built on the island which was also used by the Allies in the Second World War. There is now a naval base and a juvenile detention centre.
