There are a small number of Underground Metro Systems in Italy which can be found in four of the largest cities.
The underground rail networks of Rome and Milan are well-established and feature a large number of stations. They are an essential part of the transport infrastructure not just for tourism in the city centre but also as a means of reaching the residential areas of the suburbs for commuters. Both Naples' and Turin's Metro networks are smaller by comparison but in some instances provide the optimal choice for certain journeys around the city. |

If you're planning on spending any length of time in Rome then it's likely that at some point you'll be using the Metro system.
One of the great joys of Rome is that there's so much to enjoy by walking around and seeing things on foot, but at a certain point there's only so much you can do and the Metro provides respite for limbs that might be starting to creak a little. Most of the major sights in the city centre are quite close to a Metro stop including Colosseo right outside the Colosseum and Spagna which is the stop for Piazza di Spagna. |
Milan has one of the two best-established Metro networks in Italy, comparable in many ways to that of Rome.
It's the best way to get around the city for residents and tourists alike, with four lines accessing the main sights of the city centre as well as reaching the residential districts used by Milanese citizens. For the most part, the trains are fast, efficient and frequent, allowing for convenient access between the likes of the main train station: Milano Centrale, and the Duomo stop which is the heart of the city centre and the location of Milan Cathedral. |
The Naples Metro is smaller than those of Rome or Milan but what it lacks in stations and trains, it makes up for in aesthetics.
Much of the city centre is accessible via a combination of the underground Metro system and the longer-established overground trains which criss-cross around the city. One of the most useful routes is from Napoli Stazione Centrale to Beverello port from where you can take a ferry across to the islands of Ischia and Capri. What stands out with Naples' Metro system however are the incredible art stations such as Toledo. |
Of the four Metro systems in Italy perhaps the one in Turin provides the least benefit for tourists and is much more effective for locals. That said, it's not entirely without its uses and there occasions when it proves very beneficial.
One of the most popular areas at the fringes of the city centre is the Lingotto shopping complex where there are also a number of hotels. It's a nice, short journey from there to Porta Nuova, the main train station in Turin from which it's not too far to walk to the major sights such as the Egyptian Museum. The Turin Metro system is modern, clean and generally runs efficiently. |
