Just off the western coast of Sicily, around twenty kilometres from Trapani, lies the island of Levanzo, one of the three Aegadian Islands (Isole Egadi).
This is the smallest inhabited island in the archipelago with a population of around 450 and a total size of 5.8 km². Most visitors to the islands choose the neighbouring island of Favignana as their first port of call but Levanzo offers something quite different. |
The much smaller amount of tourists means there's more space at the island's beaches, an important factor during the busiest summer months of July and August.
From the arrival port at the south of the island to its northern tip takes around 45 minutes on foot. This is a rugged, hilly landscape and the hike provides some great views across to the Sicilian mainland and of the other islands. There are several beaches to enjoy including Cala Minnola and Cala Tramontana, all within walking distance of the port.
The port itself is dotted with flat-roofed, white buildings of either one or two storeys. Traditional fishing boats in the harbour provide splashes of colour which can also be found in ceramic artwork on the port's buildings.
There are places to eat and drink but very few shops or accommodation options to speak of. Most visitors to Levanzo come here for peace and quiet, as an alternative to the busier Favignana, or simply to complete their quest of visiting each of the islands in the archipelago.
