The Italian Ferry Ports are an essential cog in the wheel of the country's tourism.
The total number of passengers transiting through Italy's ferry ports on their way to the various islands and regions amounts to around 50 million per year. In terms of tourists coming to Italy, the main purpose of the ferries is to take passengers to the smaller Italian islands such as Elba, Ischia, Capri and Ponza or to the island groups such as the Aeolian Islands in Sicily. |
Passengers that started their journey within Italy sometimes prefer to travel by sea instead of flying which means some of the longer ferry journeys become popular such as the overnight services between the Italian mainland and Sardinia or those that connect the northern ports to those in the south.
