The trams in Italy are often overlooked by tourists for differing reasons but for the locals of some of the major cities they provide an essential means of transportation. 

Not every Italian city has a tram system but they are an integral cog in the transport network of the largest metropolises including Rome and Milan in particular. 

One of the great advantages of the trams is that they're not liable to the same traffic problems that buses can experience sometimes and there many occasions when they provide the fastest route.
