Standing at an imposing 589 metres, Mount Solaro is the highest peak on Capri and affords some of the most breathtaking views.
There are two main ways of climbing the mountain, one being somewhat quicker and less energy-consuming than the other. Most people choose the chairlift which gently rises up the mountain, gliding above the trees. |

The chairlift is suitable for most people but for those that suffer from fear of heights there's a well-established path that winds its way up rather more slowly.
However slow it may be, the walking option does allow you to see a bit more of the mountain than those that take the chairlift see with some interesting paths leading off to the likes of Cetrella, a pretty meadow area which is the home to Casa Mackenzie and the Hermitage of Santa Maria a Cetrella.

At the summit
The summit of Mount Solaro offers panoramic views of the Gulfs of Naples and Salerno; Mount Vesuvius, Ischia, the Faraglioni Rocks, and of course, the bright blue sea. At the top is a statue of Emperor Augustus and an American bar with solarium. The ruins of Fortino di Bruto, used as a fortress during the Napoleonic war, date back to about 1807 and are nearby.
The mountain has over 850 different types of vegetation and several species of birds including peregrine falcons. It’s the spectacular views from the top, however, that interest most visitors.
