The Spiaggia dei Conigli is a beach on the southern coast of the island of Lampedusa, in Sicily, one of the Pelagie Islands.
Translating as "Rabbit Beach" in English, it regularly wins awards as being one of the most beautiful beaches in the world with its shallow, crystalline waters and soft golden sand. Just in front of the beach lies the island of the same name: Isola dei Conigli. |

One of the world's best beaches
Spiaggia dei Conigli took its usual place in the Tripadvisor list of World's Best Beaches announced in February 2022. Although it was only number ten in terms of world's beaches, it was the highest ranked beach in Europe and therefore Italy.
It isn't the easiest place in the world to reach, it has to be said but there is at least a clear path to do so. Although officially a part of Italy, the island of Lampedusa is much closer to the African mainland than it is to even Sicily. It forms part of the Agrigento Province of Sicily with the harbour town of Porto Empedocle situated 215 kilometres to its north west. By contrast, the Tunisian coast is just 130 kilometres west.

How to reach Lampedusa and Spiaggia dei Conigli
However, despite those geographical constraints, Lampedusa does have its own airport which has domestic connections to Rome, Venice, Verona, Genoa and Bergamo airports. The shortest flight time is from Palermo Airport which is just an hour away.
Sea crossings from Porto Empedocle just outside Agrigento are also available but prohibitively long: the fastest maritime journeys are by hydrofoil which takes four and a quarter hours while the ferries can take in excess of ten hours.
The beach can be reached by bus from the airport in under half an hour but there are also some taxis available as well as the possibility to rent cars or scooters but the island is small enough to make that unnecessary for most people.

Limited facilities at the beach
Before you visit the beach it's best to come prepared with provisions for the day as there aren't many facilities around it for eating and drinking. From the point where the bus drops you off or you park your scooter, there is a restaurant called Onda Blu (Blue Wave), from which it's a 15 minute walk down to the beach. Apart from that, it's just a case of coming prepared and enjoying that incredible water.
