The Two Towers of Bologna are the iconic image of the city, standing guard at the end of its main thoroughfare Via Rizzoli. 

Both towers lean but are of unequal heights; the Torre Asinelli is the taller of the two, rising to 97 metres and visitors can climb its 498 internal steps to get some of the best views of the city. The smaller but more leaning Torre Garisenda reaches 48 metres.

The Two Towers of Bologna, known as "Le Due Torri" in Italian, are two iconic medieval towers located in the historic center of Bologna, Italy. They are among the most recognizable symbols of the city and stand as a testament to its rich history and architectural heritage.
History
The Two Towers, named Asinelli and Garisenda, were built in the 12th century by prominent Bolognese families as defensive structures and symbols of their power and wealth.

The taller tower, Torre degli Asinelli (Tower of the Asinelli), was constructed by the Asinelli family, while the shorter tower, Torre dei Garisenda (Tower of the Garisenda), was built by the Garisenda family. Originally, Bologna had numerous towers, but today, the Two Towers are the most famous and well-preserved examples.

  • Architecture: The Torre degli Asinelli stands at approximately 97.2 meters (319 feet) in height, making it one of the tallest medieval towers in Italy. It has a leaning angle, similar to the Leaning Tower of Pisa but to a lesser extent. The Torre dei Garisenda, on the other hand, stands at about 48 meters (157 feet) and has a more pronounced lean.
  • Climbing the Towers: Visitors can climb the Torre degli Asinelli to reach the top and enjoy stunning views of Bologna and the surrounding countryside. However, due to the more significant lean and safety concerns, the Torre dei Garisenda is not open to the public for climbing.
  • Accessibility: The Two Towers are centrally located in Bologna's historic district and are easily accessible on foot or by public transportation.
