The Six Sestieri of Venice are the different districts that make up the islands of the city centre. The word sestiere (singular) translates as "sixth" with each district effectively one sixth of the city.
Most famous of the sestieri (plural) is San Marco which is joined to its east by Castello, followed by Cannaregio which makes up the northern area of the city centre. Beneath Cannaregio are the two sestieri of San Polo and Santa Croce while completing the set of six is the southernmost Dorsoduro which translates as "hard ridge", owing to its slightly firmer ground against that of its neighbours. |

Venice, often referred to as "The Floating City," is divided into six main districts known as "sestieri." Each sestiere has a unique history and distinct charm, contributing to the city's rich cultural heritage. The division of Venice into six sestieri dates back to the 12th century when the city was growing and expanding.

- Santa Croce: A residential district with a mix of charming squares and narrow streets, offering a glimpse into local Venetian life.
- Cannaregio: One of the largest sestieri, featuring the Jewish Ghetto, historic palaces, and a quieter, more authentic side of Venice.
- Dorsoduro: Home to several important art galleries, including the Accademia Gallery, and known for its lively student population.
- Castello: The largest sestiere, encompassing both historic sites and quiet neighborhoods, and featuring the famous Arsenale shipyard.
