Standing at a height of 88 metres, the Torre del Mangia in Siena is the tallest structure in the city. Its 400 internal steps lead to a viewing area from which you can get fantastic views of the city. 

The tower protrudes from the Palazzo Pubblico, the main building on Piazza del Campo. It takes its name (translating as Tower of the Eater) from its first bellringer who was known as a glutton.

History
Construction of the Torre del Mangia began in 1325 and was completed in 1348. It was built as a bell tower for the nearby Palazzo Pubblico, which served as the city's town hall. The tower was named after its first bell-ringer, Giovanni di Balduccio, who was nicknamed "Mangia" (eater) because he had a reputation for spending his wages on food.

The tower originally stood at 70 meters (230 feet), but an additional floor was added in 1348, bringing its total height to 88 meters (289 feet), making it one of the tallest medieval towers in Italy.
