Basilica di San Marco
Latest update: 28 April 2022
Situated on Saint Mark's Square and next to the Doge's Palace, the Basilica di San Marco is the most famous religious landmark in Venice and an obligatory stop for any itinerary around the city.
Construction of the cathedral was completed in 1192 during the height of Venice's golden age of commercial dominance and as such is often referred to as the Chiesa d'Oro (The Golden Church). |

These days it's one of the busiest attractions in Venice and you will first have to queue and go through a security check before you can enter. All bags and luggage must be left at a luggage deposit in the Ateneo San Basso church which is located on the adjacent Piazzetta dei Leoncini. It's also worth noting that photos within the cathedral are not permitted.
Once inside the cathedral you're struck by how dark the interior is but this is done deliberately in order to protect the riches within, including the incredible gold mosaics that adorn the ceilings and upper levels. One of the most popular areas of the cathedral is its outdoor terrace which affords one of the best views in the city, looking down on to the hustle and bustle of Saint Mark's Square.
