Situated along the scenic coastal road between Gaeta and Terracina, the seaside town of Sperlonga is one of Lazio's prettiest.
The town is split into three distinct areas: a hill town sitting on a promontory splitting two large beach areas. At the foot of the hill town is a marina full of yachts and pleasure boats, being guarded over by a medieval watch tower called Torre Truglia. Immediately south-east of the marina is a huge expanse of sandy beach, while the beach on the opposite side is backed by houses. |
Marked out as one of Lazio's Borghi Piu Belli d'Italia, Sperlonga's hill town is quite unique in the region. Its jumble of white-washed buildings look down on to steep, narrow alleyways that conceal a surprise around every corner.
Sometimes you'll stumble upon a wonderful view out to sea, and at others you'll find yourself in the central square called Piazza della Repubblica. This is one of the nicest places in the town to take the weight off your feet or enjoy something to eat and people watch. During the summer, there are dozens of further dining options available at the numerous beach establishments.
Without a doubt, the best way to reach Sperlonga is by car as the nearest train station, Fondi-Sperlonga is situated some ten kilometres away. With the car you can take the panoramic road that lies on a hill behind the town and get some of the best possible views. It's also worth the effort to visit Villa Tiberio; the one-time residence of the Roman Emperor Tiberius situated two kilometres south-east of the main town area. You may also wish to visit the Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Sperlonga which is close to the villa entrance.
