Known in Italian as the Bandiera Arancione, the Orange Flag is a mark of excellence awarded to Italian towns that meet certain criteria in terms of tourism and the environment. In most regions there are several towns that have the award while the regions of Sicily, Molise and Umbria have just one each at the moment.
There are similarities between the Bandiera Arancione and another association called I Borghi Più Belli d'Italia - the latter translating roughly as Italy's Most Beautiful Villages. Indeed, there are numerous towns and villages that appear on both lists but as a general rule, the Bandiera Arancione or Orange Flag towns tend to be slightly larger than the Borghi. |
