The Sacro Monte di Varallo is a religious sanctuary in the Province of Vercelli. Since 2003, it's been a UNESCO World Heritage Site under the Sacri Monti of Piedmont and Lombardy heading.

The Sacro Monte di Varallo, located in the Piedmont region of Northern Italy, is a unique and fascinating religious complex known for its sanctuary and chapels. It is part of the "Sacro Monte" (Sacred Mountain) tradition, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which consists of several mountain sanctuaries in Northern Italy, each depicting various episodes from the life of Jesus Christ.
History
The Sacro Monte di Varallo was founded in the early 16th century by Franciscan friar Bernardino Caimi. Inspired by the devotion to recreate significant moments from Christ's life, Caimi initiated the construction of a series of chapels and shrines on the slopes of Monte Crea, near the town of Varallo. The complex aimed to offer pilgrims a journey through the life of Christ in a natural and spiritual setting.

Construction of the chapels and statues continued over several centuries, with different artists and craftsmen contributing to the project. The result is a remarkable collection of artistic and religious expressions that have attracted pilgrims and tourists for centuries.
