The Tuscany region evokes thoughts of rolling hills interspersed with vineyards and pretty hill-top towns but while this is true, there's much more besides. Tuscany has some of the most impressive medieval cities on the planet within its confines including Florence, Siena, Lucca, Pisa, Arezzo and Pistoia which is sometimes referred to as the mini Florence.
I've also included a long list of hill towns among which are San Gimignano, Volterra, Montepulciano and Pienza, the last of which lies within the UNESCO World Heritage listed Val d'Orcia, an area which to many people is the very definition of Tuscany. |
Aside from this there are the region's national parks where you'll find the Tuscan Archipelago, a series of stunning islands including Giglio, Giannutri, Pianosa and Elba.
