The very best Italian Beaches have been selected from an enormous number, with every step of the country's 4,600 miles of coastline covered. This doesn't only include the numerous coastlines on the mainland, but also the dozens of islands, large and small where some of the very best beaches can be found.
Of course, not everyone agrees on what makes a beach great and the debate will forever rage on. However, the selections made come from a personal point of view and for me it's very much a case of those beaches with the cleanest water, the type that provides those turquoise shades. It's also imperative that the beaches themselves are of soft, powdery sand rather than pebbles. |

Within this section there are four categories included: the Best Beaches in Italy section which showcases the cream of Italian beaches that stand alone, away from a main town or resort. On this list are the likes of the Spiaggia dei Conigli on the island of Lampedusa in Sicily, the beautiful La Pelosa Beach in Sardinia and the spectacular Cala delle Caldane Beach on the little island of Giglio in the Tuscan Archipelago.
The Beach Resorts of Italy list is very slightly different: these are typically larger beaches which have become resorts in their own right with accommodation and dining facilities built up around them. Among the best of these are the dazzling waters of Biodola beach on the island of Elba, the crystalline waters of Santa Maria al Bagno in Puglia and the heavenly Fontane Bianche in Sicily.

The third category details the best Seaside Towns of Italy; this is to say the larger coastal towns which have more to offer than simply the beach itself and in many cases, numerous beaches to choose from. Some of the favourites listed within are the town of Sestri Levante in the northern region of Liguria with its famous Baia del Silenzio beach and the town of Gallipoli in Puglia which is home to the beautifully-named Spiaggia della Purità or Purity Beach.
Of the four categories featured on this page, the final one is the Top Ten Italian Beach Resorts. Now you may justifiably ask what the difference is between this section and the aforementioned Beach Resorts of Italy. Well, although they have very similar names, the latter of the two sections is obviously narrowed down to just 10, but can also be considered as something of a hybrid between the larger seaside towns and the smaller resorts. In essence, the Top Ten Italian Beach Resorts section provides an at a glance overview of the best coastal areas in Italy that you might want to consider for a holiday. The top ten lists includes the town of Taormina in Sicily which can boast the extraordinary Isola Bella beach and Tropea in Calabria whose two beaches stretch out either side of a picturesque hilltop monastery.
