Not to be confused with Cortona in Tuscany, the fortress town of Ortona in the Abruzzo region of Central Italy is home to 23,276 inhabitants.
It’s a beautiful hidden gem with views of the surrounding mountains and sea, an historic castle to explore and ideal for those looking to escape the crowds of the larger resorts nearby. |

Spiritual Pilgrimage
Ortona is the end point in the ‘Cammino di San Tommaso’, a 316-kilometre cultural and spiritual pilgrimage that begins in Rome. In 2016, local Ortona winery Dora Sarchese joined forces with the organisers of the Cammino di San Tommaso. They wanted to reward weary travellers after they made the Rome to Ortona pilgrimage, so they created Italy’s first free permanent wine fountain.
Taking the chance to taste the wine
Housed in a large upright wine barrel with the front cut out, the fountain is available not only to those who take the pilgrimage but to anyone who wishes to stop by to fill and enjoy a cup of Dora Sarchese's delicious red wine.
The fountain is located on site at Dora Sarchese's winery in Caldari di Ortona and is available anytime during their opening hours (typically Mon-Fri 9am-12.30pm, 3-6pm, and Sat 9am-12.30pm). We recommend stopping by their cellar door on your way out to buy a few bottles to take home and enjoy.
