Lipari is the largest of the Aeolian Islands with a population of just under thirteen thousand.
This is the cultural, political and touristic hub of the island group and the place where you'll find most accommodation and dining options. With its size of 37 km², some kind of motorised transport is the best way to explore and there are outlets on the island where it's possible to rent cars and scooters. |

You can also bring cars across from the Sicilian mainland although there are some seasonal restrictions in place for that. There is also a bus system on the island which allows you to complete a circuit and see the main sights, among which are the fantastic views of the neighbouring islands, particularly Salina and Vulcano.
Many visitors coming across just for the day choose to stick to the main town area and there's plenty to see and do here too. The main town has two port areas; one for the ferries and another for smaller craft such as fishing boats or private boats for excursions to the other islands. Between the two ports lies the centro storico/old town, a citadel which is dominated by its castle.

Getting there
You can sail to Lipari from each of the other six islands via ferry or hydrofoil with a number of private day-trips available. Lipari can also be reached directly from the Italian mainland ports of Naples, Reggio Calabria and Vibo Valentia, as well as the Sicilian ports of Palermo, Messina and Milazzo; the latter of which offers the most popular route.
