Profile
The Arian Baptistery, also known as the Baptistry of the Arians, is a historic religious monument located in Ravenna, Italy. It is one of the several ancient baptisteries in the city and is known for its unique architectural design and significant historical associations.
History
The Arian Baptistery was built in the early 6th century AD during the reign of the Ostrogothic King Theodoric the Great. Theodoric, who followed the Arian Christian faith, commissioned the construction of this baptistery as a place of worship for the Arian Christians in Ravenna.
Arianism was a theological belief that rejected the doctrine of the Holy Trinity as upheld by mainstream Christianity. Theodoric, as an Arian Christian, sought to establish his own religious institutions in Ravenna, which was then an important political and cultural center in Italy.
