What we in English call The Marches region of Central Italy, is known either as Le Marche or simply, Marche (pronounced "mar-kay") in Italian. Marche is home to UNESCO World Heritage towns such as Urbino and a stunning coastline in the Conero Peninsula (Riviera del Conero), while its rolling hills and vineyards are a magical sight.
The capital city of Marche is Ancona which has a fascinating old quarter but is principally known as an important port with ferries and cargo crossing the Adriatic to Croatia. Another major city is Ascoli-Piceno which is famous for its historic centre and squares such as Piazza del Popolo, one of the finest in Italy. |
Many visitors choose Marche for its great beaches and some of the best can be found at seaside towns such as Sirolo, Numana, San Benedetto del Tronto, Fano and Senigallia to name just a few.
Head inland and you'll find some of the most picturesque countryside you could imagine; rolling hills topped with historic villages and separated by endless vineyards. The area around Ripatransone and Acquaviva Picena is particularly beautiful while other hill towns of note are Loreto, Recanati, Corinaldo and Offida. There are dozens more scenic towns besides, as well as some fascinating historic locations such as Gradara, Iesi and Fossombrone. A personal favourite town of mine is Grottammare which is wedged between the sea and the hills and offers a choice of relaxing beach atmosphere or cooler climes in its upper historic centre.
Nature plays a big part in Marche's sights; one of the most fascinating is the Frasassi Caves with their stalagmites and stalactites while just a short distance from there is the pretty Furlo Pass valley area. If you do visit that area, don't miss the Santuario di Madonna di Frasassi; a small religious sanctuary that was somehow built in the opening of a cave.
