Mount Subasio is situated within the region of Umbria and the Province of Perugia.

It belongs to the Comune of Assisi and rises to a maximum elevation of 1,290 metres above sea level. 

Places of interest nearby include the towns of Santa Maria degli Angeli, Bastia Umbra, Spello and Foligno.

Mount Subasio, also known as Monte Subasio, is a mountain located in the Umbria region of central Italy. It rises to an elevation of 1,290 meters (4,232 feet) and is situated near the picturesque town of Assisi, famous for being the birthplace of St. Francis of Assisi.

The mountain offers a blend of natural beauty, historical significance, and religious importance, making it a popular destination for both nature lovers and pilgrims.

Mount Subasio is characterized by its lush forests, meadows, and rocky slopes. The mountain is part of the Subasio Regional Park, a protected natural area that encompasses over 8,000 hectares of pristine landscapes. The park is rich in biodiversity and offers a variety of flora and fauna, making it an excellent destination for hiking and wildlife spotting.

History
Mount Subasio has a rich historical and religious significance. In the Middle Ages, the mountain was a place of refuge and spirituality for hermits and monks seeking solitude and closeness to God. Many hermitages and monastic settlements were built on its slopes, and some of them can still be visited today.

The mountain is closely associated with the life of St. Francis of Assisi, who founded the Franciscan Order in the early 13th century. It is believed that St. Francis often retreated to the solitude of Mount Subasio for prayer and contemplation. The Eremo delle Carceri, a hermitage and a place of special devotion for the Franciscans, is located on the mountain and is a popular pilgrimage site.
