Spilimbergo's main sights
The town's main sights include Spilimbergo Cathedral and the adjacent Castello di Spilimbergo. The main square in the town centre is Piazza Garibaldi which leads on to Corso Roma with its array of shops, before ending at an archway entrance.
One of the most beautiful towns in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region, Spilimbergo occupies an area of land between two bodies of water: to its east is the Tagliamento River and to its west, the Torrente Meduna. There's also a tributary of the River Tagliamento, the Torrente Cosa which passes through the town at its western edge and is crossed via a road bridge.

School of Mosaics
The lasting impression you leave Spilimbergo with is a sense of history and beauty. The town is home to the region's School of Mosaics (Scuola di Mosaicisti del Friuli) but it's the incredible frescoes that adorn the walls of numerous public buildings that are most visible.
One of the best examples of the frescoed buildings is the Palazzo della Magnifica Thadea at the western boundary of the town in the Castello di Spilimbergo complex next to the Cathedral on Piazza del Duomo.
Spilimbergo's Piazza del Duomo breaks the mould of the typical Italian cathedral square as it's not at the heart of the town, occupying instead a rather quiet area with a large lawn. The space around the piazza is used as a car park at certain times of day but there are some further historic buildings here, including the one that houses the Spilimbergo Tourist Office (Pro Loco Spilimbergo).

Pretty frescoes
The town centre is a short walk west of the Cathedral; along that walk you'll pass many of the town's best buildings, often with frescoes and the Torre Orientale with its clock tower is worthy of special attention. The busiest square of the town is Piazza Garibaldi which comes alive particularly on Thursdays when it hosts the weekly market in the morning.
The walk from Piazza Garibaldi, west along Corso Roma is one of the most attractive in the town; passing shops on either side of the porticoed street, medieval flags strung from one side to the other and ending at another clocktower with its own large fresco.
Spilimbergo doesn't have a train station and while there are local bus services, it's best to have a car to really be able to explore the area effectively. A 15 minute drive directly south of Spilimbergo brings you to the pretty medieval village of Valvasone while roughly twice the distance in the same direction will get you to San Vito al Tagliamento. The beautiful city of Udine is a 35 minute drive east of Spilimbergo while the best seaside town in the area is Caorle which takes about an hour by car.
