Elba Ferry Schedules
Latest update: 20 October 2023
The Elba ferry schedules detail the numerous options available for Maritime crossings to and from the island. The most popular route into Elba comes from the Italian mainland port of Piombino in Tuscany. From Piombino you can take a ferry to three different ports on the island of Elba: Portoferraio, Cavo and Rio Marina.
It's also possible to sail to Elba from the port of Bastia on the French-owned island of Corsica. Ferries and hydrofoils cross from the Italian mainland to Elba every day of the year and there are dozens of different crossing times each day. The route with the greatest number of crossings is from Piombino to Portoferraio, the capital of Elba and its main port, with more than 50 sailing times. |

The ferries from Piombino to Elba take an hour to an hour and 15 minutes, while the slightly faster hydrofoils take 40 minutes. With the ferries you can sit out on deck and also bring a car across to the island but you can do neither of those things with the hydrofoils.
The shortest route into Elba is via the port of Cavo on the north-eastern tip of the island. From here to Piombino it's just a short hop by hydrofoil with a journey time of 15 minutes. Ferries into Cavo take a little longer; 40 minutes, but a good option if you're planning on bringing a car across and staying in the eastern half of the island. Most of the hydrofoils that sail to Cavo, then continue along to Portoferraio. Elba's third main ferry port, Rio Marina is 45 minutes from Piombino and reachable by ferry only.
From Bastia in Corsica it's a three hour ferry journey to Portoferraio, which is again by ferry only. The ferries between Elba and Corsica are seasonal, starting from towards the end of May. As soon as the date for the final crossing of the year between Corsica and Elba has been announced, it will be posted here.
If you have an early flight to catch from Pisa or Florence, it's worth bearing in mind that the earliest daily crossing to the Italian mainland leaves Elba (Portoferraio) at 05:00, arriving in Piombino at 06:00. From Piombino to Pisa Airport takes an hour to an hour and a half at that time of morning so you can calculate being there around 07:30, two hours before an 09:30 flight. To get to Florence Airport can take another hour on top of that so it's best not to plan anything earlier than a 10:30 flight departure.
Conversely, if you're arriving at the airport in the evening before making your way to Elba, the last ferry of the day leaves Piombino at 22:20, arriving in Portoferraio at 23:20. If your flight is scheduled to land in Pisa at 19:00, you can expect to leave the airport by around 19:45 (including time to wait for luggage and go through passport control), and then be at Piombino by around 21:15. So really, any flight time into Pisa later than 19:00 leaves you in danger of missing that last crossing. With Florence Airport you shouldn't book an arrival time any later than 18:00.
From the Italian mainland there are three main companies that offer ferry and hydrofoil services. Moby Lines (distinctive by their dazzling cartoon-style livery) and Blu Navy provide ferry services between Piombino and Portoferraio, while the third company, Toremar, provide both ferries and hydrofoils. Toremar's ferries and hydrofoils are available from Piombino to and from Portoferraio and Cavo, while between Piombino and Rio Marina they only run ferries. Toremar are the only ferry company providing crossings between Piombino and the ports of Cavo and Rio Marina.
Ticket prices vary depending on the route you take, the type of craft (ferry or hydrofoil), and to some degree, the date and time that you're planning to travel. As a rough guide though, a single foot-passenger ticket on Moby Lines from Piombino to Portoferraio costs €17.70 for an adult. The same journey with one adult and a medium-sized car (such as a VW Golf for example), comes to €56.75 with the car in this example costing around €40.
Please note, the above prices are just examples and do not include any booking fees which may be applied when using an online booking engine such as the further down this page. For a full breakdown of individual routes please see below or scroll down for an overview of all Elba ferry routes.

Cavo Ferry Schedules
The port of Cavo is situated at the north-eastern tip of Elba which means it's the closest point to the mainland. The port of Piombino is just 13 kilometres away which allows for the shortest journey times between Elba and the Tuscan mainland. Both hydrofoils and ferries are available with the larger ferries able to carry motor vehicles and the smaller hydrofoils for foot passengers only.
Toremar operate the hydrofoils which take 15 to 20 minutes between ports while the Moby ferries with their distinctive comic-book livery take around half an hour to make the same journey. A single ferry ticket costs very little less than the hydrofoil so unless you're bringing a car across, that's always the best option. |

Marciana Marina Ferry Schedules
Situated along the north coast of Elba, Marciana Marina is particularly well placed for crossings to the island of Capraia.
In fact it offers the most convenient route to and from the island from any other port with a distance of 40 kilometres separating the two and requiring a journey time of an hour and a half. In effect, this means that Marciana Marina is just about the only place from which you can consider a day-trip to Capraia. The three hour round-trip is at least an hour less than from Portoferraio or the six hour round-trip required from Livorno. Marciana Marina is also reachable from San Vincenzo on the mainland, during the summer only, with Aquavision operating hydrofoil crossings. |

Marina di Campo Ferry Schedules
The resort of Marina di Campo is situated on the south coast of Elba which makes it the best port to visit the island of Pianosa from. Crossings from Marina di Campo to Pianosa are available all year round and operated by Aquavision with their hydrofoils.
Leaving Marina di Campo at ten in the morning, the hydrofoils reach their destination 45 minutes later and are deliberately-timed for a day-trip, with the return sailing leaving Pianosa at five pm. If you're staying in Marina di Campo, it's also worth bearing in mind there's a direct connection to Piombino on the mainland; there are fewer sailing times though and they're only for foot passengers. |

Porto Azzurro Ferry Schedules
The dazzling Porto Azzurro is perhaps a cut above some of the other resorts on the island. They're all difficult to separate and offer their own charms, but Porto Azzurro has just a little extra with its crystalline waters and pristine town centre.
Porto Azzurro occupies a little inlet on the eastern shore of Elba, from where it's possible to sail north to San Vincenzo or south to the island of Giglio. Both routes are only available during the summer season and operated by Aquavision. The route to the mainland port of San Vincenzo takes two hours with the same journey time required to reach Giglio. For the trips to Giglio an overnight stay is recommended to avoid the four hour round-trip. |

Portoferraio Ferry Schedules
The official and cultural capital of Elba is Portoferraio. The port was founded by the Medici family in the 16th century and it's by far the most historic town on the island. Some of Elba's main sights can be found here including the Palazzina dei Mulini, the residence of Napoleon during his exile on the island, and the fort complexes that were designed by the Medici to make the port a stronghold.
Portoferraio is also the most populous town on the island with a new town and a more attractive old town. The ferries leave from the new town with one of the most eye-catching sites being the huge Moby ferries bedecked in their garish designs. Portoferraio is connected by sea to Bastia, Capraia, Pianosa and Piombino. |

Rio Marina Ferry Schedules
Occupying a position along the east coast of Elba and directly facing the mainland is the port of Rio Marina. The town offers one of the most visible traces of the island's now defunct mining trade with some of the rusting apparatus still on show just outside town.
The town itself is an attractive resort with a good selection of bars, restaurants, accommodation and shops. Two destinations can be reached directly from Rio Marina, with the mainland port of Piombino just 45 minutes away using the Toremar ferry service with up to seven sailing times per day and all year round. Heading south-east from Rio Marina in the opposite direction to Piombino, it's possible to sail to the island of Pianosa but only on Tuesdays. |
