Around 120 different airlines operate services here and in the last year before the Coronavirus pandemic (2019), some 43 million passengers transited through here.
Located as it is, 30 kilometres to the west of Rome, in the town of Fiumicino, Leonardo da Vinci Airport allows you to collect a car and get on the motorway straight away without having to negotiate Rome city centre. There are also excellent train and coach connections for pedestrians heading to the centre of Rome or to Rome Termini train station for example.
The airport is situated on the Tyrrhenian Coast in the large residential area of Fiumicino which is a popular spot for locals with a series of beaches both in the town itself and along the coast in places like Fregene and Lido di Maccarese. Heading south across the River Tiber that separates Fiumicino from the seaside town of Ostia you first reach the old Roman port of Ostia Antica which is one of Italy's most impressive archaeological sites. To the north of the airport and heading inland is Lake Bracciano with its series of lakeside towns like Trevignano Romano and Anguillara Sabazia, while south of the airport is another area of lakes around the Castelli Romani.
