Ortisei is one of the key ski resorts in the Val Gardena area of the Dolomites; a sub-range of the Italian Alps. In an area where a mixture of languages are spoken, the resort is often referred to as Urtijëi which comes from the local Ladin language. Both German and Italian are also widely spoken in Ortisei and the other resorts of Val Gardena.
The resort is characterised by a number of Alpine-chalet-style hotels, often brightly-coloured which lend the town a distinctly cheerful appearance. One of the prettiest sights is the Chiesa San Ulrico while the Museo de Gherdëina exhibits local arts, crafts and historical artefacts.
