The seaside town of Agropoli is situated within the Province of Salerno in Campania and famous for being the gateway to the Cilento Coast. Moreover, it's by some distance the sub-region's most populous town with around 22,000 permanent residents.
It lies at the northern extreme of the Cilento region, facing out on to the Tyrrhenian Sea and just a short distance south of the famous archaeological site of Paestum. All of these factors combine to add to the lustre of Agropoli with visitors attracted not only by its beaches but by its multiple accommodation options. |
The town itself is vibrant with a good mix of age-groups and plenty of choice in terms of dining, shopping and sightseeing. The most famous sight is the Aragonese/Angevin castle which sits on a hill and affords some wonderful views of the town and its attractive marina area. The old town that surrounds the castle is full of charm with narrow, stone walkways interspersed with some enticing restaurants, bars and cafès serving local cuisine and of course fresh fish dishes.
Getting here is quite simple too; Agropoli is something of a transport hub for the region, easily accessed by car but also with public transport options including buses and trains.

Profile
Agropoli is a charming coastal town located in the Campania region of southern Italy. Its history can be traced back to ancient times when it was known as "Akropolis," a Greek colony founded around the 6th century BC. Over the centuries, the town saw the rise and fall of various civilizations, including the Romans, Byzantines, Normans, and the Kingdom of Naples.
The town's strategic location on a promontory overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea made it a significant maritime and defensive center. Agropoli played a crucial role in trade and cultural exchange, and it was once a stronghold for Saracen pirates during the medieval era.
