Situated in the Province of Vercelli, the town of Varallo Sesia is one of the prettiest in the whole Piedmont region.
It stands at an elevation of 456 metres above sea level and has a population of 7,147 residents. The most famous sight in the town is in fact just above it: the Sacro Monte di Varallo is a religious sanctuary, one of several in the region to be listed by UNESCO. |
Commonly known as Varallo, the town's full name comes from the fact it sits on the banks of the River Sesia that flows past it. Another body of water flows through the town, the Mastallone Stream which flows into the Sesia. One of the centrepiece attractions of the town is the Ponte Antonini bridge which looks down on to the Mastallone and attracts swimmers during the summer months.
The rest of the town is beautifully-appointed with a great array of shops and restaurants which sit on wide boulevards and contain historic buildings in a range of colours.
