The Sacro Monte di Orta is a religious sanctuary in the Province of Novara. Since 2003, it's been a UNESCO World Heritage Site under the Sacri Monti of Piedmont and Lombardy heading.

Sacro Monte di Orta, also known as the Sacred Mountain of Orta, is a religious complex located in the town of Orta San Giulio, on Lake Orta in the Piedmont region of northern Italy. It is one of the nine Sacri Monti (Sacred Mountains) in the region and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The site is renowned for its beautiful chapels, sculptures, and panoramic views of Lake Orta and the surrounding landscape. The Sacro Monte di Orta is situated on a hill overlooking Lake Orta and the picturesque town of Orta San Giulio.

The complex comprises twenty chapels, each dedicated to different episodes from the life of Saint Francis of Assisi. These chapels are interconnected by a winding walking path, offering visitors a serene and contemplative journey through the lush greenery. 

The chapels are adorned with exquisite frescoes, terracotta statues, and stucco decorations, created by various artists over the centuries. The artwork portrays scenes from the life of Saint Francis and his teachings, adding to the spiritual and artistic significance of the site.
History
The construction of Sacro Monte di Orta began in the late 16th century and continued into the 17th century, inspired by the success of similar devotional complexes in the region. The site was established as a place of pilgrimage and devotion, where visitors could reflect on the life and teachings of Saint Francis of Assisi, the founder of the Franciscan Order.

The chapels and artwork at Sacro Monte di Orta were financed by local noble families and benefactors, resulting in a beautiful fusion of architectural styles and artistic expressions.
