The Castel Nuovo stands guard to the city of Naples, across the road from the busy Beverello Port. As such, the imposing castle is the first building many visitors to the city see on first arrival. 

Also known as the Maschio Angioino, it was built in the thirteenth century and is now part of an impressive suite of sights in close proximity which includes the Royal Palace of Naples.

History
Castel Nuovo was commissioned by Charles I of Anjou, a French king, in the 13th century as part of his effort to consolidate his rule over Naples. The castle was designed as a fortification and a royal residence. Over the centuries, it served as the residence of various rulers, including the Angevin and the Aragonese dynasties.

The castle underwent several renovations and expansions under different rulers, and its name "New Castle" (Castel Nuovo) was given to distinguish it from the older Castel dell'Ovo. Today, it stands as a reminder of the city's medieval and Renaissance past.
