The castles of Trentino Alto Adige South Tyrol detailed below provide some of the best days out to explore the region's history.

Built in the 13th century, the Buonconsiglio Castle is perhaps the most popular fortress in the Trentino Alto Adige South Tyrol region, partly because its location in the city centre of Trento makes it particularly easy to visit.

Both Castel Beseno and Castel Stenico were built slightly earlier, in the 12th century and occupy defensive hilltop positions. Their locations mean they require motorised transport to visit.
