Situated around nine kilometres south west of Sorrento, the Comune of Massa Lubrense has a small but historic marina with a beach called Marina della Lobra.
Not surprisingly, this fishing village was a favourite holiday destination for ancient Romans and some had villas built to enjoy the glorious seaside location. |

The son in law of the Emperor Augustus, Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa, had a villa here where he entertained guests. Agrippa was born in about 63 BC and was also a famous Roman general and architect.
Just above the marina is a 16th century church, Santa Maria della Lobra, which was built over a Roman church. It has a 17th century ceiling and cloisters while the majolica floor is 18th century. The peaceful and picturesque Marina della Lobra is now surrounded by a handful of hotels, restaurants and a couple of shops but still retains much of its original charm and remains unspoiled. Boats are romantically swaying in the pretty harbour and boat trips go from here to Capri and the Amalfi Coast.
It’s quite a challenging uphill walk in the heat of summer of about 1.5 kms from Marina della Lobra to the main square of Massa Lubrense but there are buses. There are also buses from Massa Lubrense to Sorrento and the journey is about 15 minutes. Some people also walk along the ancient mule tracks from Massa Lubrense to Sorrento.
