The Piazza delle Erbe in Verona is one of the liveliest spots in the city. It's dominated by a number of medieval buildings including the Case Mazzanti with their colourful frescoes. At ground level there are numerous bars and restaurants where you can dine al fresco.
At one end, the Piazza is overlooked by the Torre Gardello which is dwarfed by the taller Torre dei Lamberti which can be climbed. |
Beneath the Torre Gardello is the Colonna di San Marco, erected in 1523 to celebrate the city's assimilation to the Venetian Republic. A second column, the Colonna Antica lies at the opposite end of the square while between them both is the Fontana della Madonna, built in the eleventh century. A structure called La Tribuna is the fourth piece of statuary on the Piazza although its origins are disputed.
