The busy, bustling Piazza Venezia is one of the most important traffic intersections in Rome and whilst it may not be the ideal place to take a load off your feet and enjoy the surroundings, it does have some quite extraordinary monuments around it.
Unquestionably hugging the limelight in the square is the building of many names which I've called Il Vittoriano on this website. |

The Altare della Patria
It's a building that divides opinion among Romans with those that don't like it so much calling it things like "The Wedding Cake" or "The Typewriter". It does also have another official name which is the "Altare della Patria", the Altar of the Nation.
From the terrace of Il Vittoriano you can watch the traffic chaos unfold on the busy roads below as vehicles come from all directions and generally in a bit of a hurry. From this position you can see the beautiful Basilica di San Marco on your left and if you walk to the other side of the terrace you can see Trajan's Column standing proudly next to two churches with magnificent domes: the Chiesa Santa Maria di Loreto and the Chiesa del SS Nome di Maria al Foro Traiano.

Other landmarks on Piazza Venezia
One of the reasons that some Romans dislike the Altare della Patria is that its construction towards the end of the 19th century obscured the previously prominent monuments of the Capitoline Hill just behind it. Aside from exploring the interior of Il Vittoriano which houses a Museum of the Risorgimento, among other things, it's most definitely worth the walk south of the building to the Capitoline Museums on Piazza Campidoglio.
It's strange to think it, but the long staircase that leads up to the Basilica di Santa Maria in Ara Coeli goes partially unnoticed as most pedestrian traffic makes its way up the adjacent staircase to the Piazza del Campidoglio. All of these sights, including the beautiful Basilica merit attention in their own right and it's worth making a little bit of time to enjoy them all.
Piazza Venezia doesn't have its own Metro stop; the closest one is Colosseo which is a walk of around a kilometre away. But there are walks and there are walks; this one is quite magnificent, along the Via dei Fori Imperiali where you'll pass the Roman Forum on your right, Trajan's Market on your left and end up at the Colosseum which is flanked by the Arch of Constantine. It's a tough life being a tourist in Rome!
