Religious Sites of Calabria

There are two religious sites of Calabria that stand out from the rest. These are separate from the hundreds of churches and cathedral of the region's major cities and don't really fit into any other category.

That said, the Santuario di San Francesco di Paola is hugely popular and receives visits all year round from Italian pilgrims. The Sanctuary was built in honour of Saint Francis, not the one from Assisi, but Saint Francis from the seaside town of Paola. In stark contrast to the building complex of the Sanctuary, we find the Chiesetta di Piedigrotta, a quirky church in a cave near Pizzo.
