This collection of religious sites of Marche showcases those that are situated outside of the region's main towns and cities.
Among this group is one of the quirkiest sights in Italy: situated close to the Frasassi Caves is the Santuario di Madonna di Frasassi which is a tiny sanctuary constructed at the mouth of a cave. More conventional is the Abbazia di Chiaravalle di Fiastra, close to the towns of Tolentino and Urbisaglia. The twelfth century Cistercian Abbey is at the centre of a complex of buildings surrounded by attractive parklands and a popular day out. |
Two more abbeys in Marche are of great historical interest as well: the Abbazia di San Vittore alla Chiuse is another that lies close to the Frasassi Caves, and the Abbazia di Santa Maria del Mutino is one of the most picturesque sights on the local landscape.
