​The Rhaetian Railway has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2008, under the official heading of Rhaetian Railway in the Albula Bernina Landscapes.

The railway consists of two separate lines that pass through the Italian and Swiss Alps, encompassing some spectacular scenery along the way.
The railways were picked out by UNESCO for their exemplary ability to connect some of the most remote towns and villages within the Alpine areas. You can start the journeys from the mountain town of Tirano, in the Province of Sondrio. ​

The Rhaetian Railway is a marvel of engineering, with its intricate network of narrow-gauge tracks that traverse steep slopes, cross viaducts, and navigate through numerous tunnels and galleries. The route covers approximately 122 kilometers, connecting the town of Thusis in Switzerland with Tirano in Italy, passing through breathtaking alpine landscapes along the way.

One of the most iconic sections of the railway is the Albula and Bernina lines, which run through the Albula and Bernina passes and offer some of the most scenic train journeys in the world. The Albula Line is known for its graceful viaducts and helical tunnels, while the Bernina Line boasts stunning vistas of glaciers and snow-capped peaks.

The railway's historic and well-preserved stations, some of which date back to the early 20th century, add to the charm of the journey. Notably, the Landwasser Viaduct and Brusio Circular Viaduct are architectural marvels that attract railway enthusiasts and photographers alike.
