The Torre Civica in Ravenna is one of those most Italian of things: a leaning tower. Originally built in the twelfth century as a demonstration of wealth and power by a local noble family, the tower still stands to this day, although at a slightly reduced height.
It currently reaches 26 metres but was another 13 metres higher until 2000 when the upper section was removed for safety reasons. |
It's not possible to enter the tower as a visitor but you can get a great view of its lean from Via Girolamo Rossi, a short walk from the main square in the city centre: Piazza del Popolo.
