The Trastevere district of Rome covers an area to the west of the River Tiber and it is from this that it derives its name. The Italian name for the Tiber is Tevere and the tras element means "beyond", so in effect the name is "Beyond Tiber".
Its northern boundary is marked by the Vatican City while to the south it reaches as far as the Porta Portese city gate. |

Sightseeing Trastevere
The area is synonymous with being young and to a certain extent bohemian in its outlook. It's one of the best areas in the city for nightlife and can also boast a number of interesting sights.
One of its central areas is the Piazza di Santa Maria which is home to the beautiful Basilica di Santa Maria in Trastevere. A short walk north of the Basilica brings you to the Palazzo Farnesina with its famous frescoes by Raphael among the exhibits on display.

The Janiculum
Marking an area of Trastevere's western boundary is the Janiculum Hill where there's a park area popular with Romans who go there for a stroll and to enjoy the panoramic views down on to the city centre.
