History
The history of the Abbey of Sant'Antimo dates back to the 8th century when it was founded by Charlemagne, the King of the Franks. According to legend, Charlemagne had a vision of the Archangel Michael instructing him to build an abbey in the valley where a white ox would lie down. The king followed the vision's guidance and established the abbey, which later became a significant center of spirituality and pilgrimage.

Throughout the centuries, the Abbey of Sant'Antimo underwent various renovations and expansions, reflecting different architectural styles, but it always retained its essential Romanesque character. The abbey experienced periods of prosperity as well as decline, and it was eventually abandoned in the 19th century.

In the 20th century, the abbey was restored, and religious services were reintroduced, allowing visitors to witness the ancient monastic traditions that are still practiced to this day.
