The archaeological sites and museums of Valle d'Aosta attest to the rich history of the region. Valle d'Aosta takes its name from the very first Roman Emperor, Augustus, and there are some wonderful examples of that era around the capital city of Aosta.
The Arch of Augustus now occupies a roundabout at the edge of the city centre while the magnificent Roman Theatre of Aosta is one of the finest Roman Monuments in Italy. Aosta is also home to a number of museums that detail the region's fascinating past from much earlier than the Romans. |
