The city of Busto Arsizio is located within the Province of Varese and has a population of 83,628 inhabitants. Standing at an elevation of 226 metres above sea level, it lies 34 kilometres north west of Milan, the regional capital of Lombardy.

Busto Arsizio's large population makes it more populous than its provincial capital, Varese; a rare occurrence in Italy. 
A modern city which is focused on industry and commerce, Busto Arsizio's highlights revolve around its churches, squares and bustling shopping areas. Its most important church is the Santuario Santa Maria di Piazza, built in the 16th century. A short walk through a side alley takes you from Piazza Santa Maria to another impressive square: Piazza San Giovanni with its centrepiece, the Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista, built in the 17th century.
