History
Castiglione di Garfagnana has a long history dating back to ancient times when it was a Roman settlement. Throughout the centuries, the town was ruled by various noble families, including the Este and the Medici.

The strategic position of Castiglione di Garfagnana made it an important defensive stronghold during medieval times, and the town's fortress and defensive walls were built during this period.
